Catching up with Kelly Neis

Kelly, there’s been a lot of questions buzzing around about your upcoming race. Can you give us the real facts: Where, When, Classes, Track-Style, Payout etc.
Yea, we're going to have the race on June 27, Saturday night, at the Grand Forks County Fairgrounds. The track is going to be a mixture of a supercross and a motocross layout. We're going to try to keep it exciting but also provide a safe layout for all abilities. We're will run 250 A, B & C, 450 A, B & C, a Vet Class, Women's Class, 85cc, 65cc, 50cc and one crazy Quad Pro Class.

Payout for A class will be $300 1st place, $200 2nd place, $150 3rd place, $75 4th place and $50 5th place for both A classes. Quad class winner will get $150. The track will be built in the infield of the race car track. We're going to be able to use the front stretch of the speedway and the banked turns as part of the track layout and we're hoping for a couple  thousand people watching from the stands--should be a lot of fun.

How did you get involved with the Grand Forks Fair and how did your race come to be a reality?
Kelly and his son, Brandon--also co-founder of Grassroots.Well, I've been racing out of Grand Forks for over 10 years now and have never been able to race in front of a home-town crowd so I decided to do something about it and I approached the Fair Board during the winter with my idea for the event and they decided to go with it. All the local riders from the Grand Forks area deserve to race in front of their home-town friends and family and everybody I've talked to is pretty stoked on the whole deal. I wish my son Brandon could be here to race it with me but he is out in California just living the dream; I'm sure he would have liked to be here.

I heard you have quite the crew ready to build that track…
Just my usual crew: Ben Bauer, Dave Francis, Mike Spoor, Gary Wylot, Leo Kuether, Bob Nelson and Paul Landis. I always seem to lean on these guys to make my crazy ideas work out. Thanks Guys, always good to have good friends. A bunch of local riders are also going to help out and I want to thank those guys too. My daughter Kelsey and girlfriend Jennifer have also helped out a lot.

Besides the racing action on Saturday, what else is there to do at the GF Fair?
Well, the carnies are in town so you can hang out and ride the rides and just take in all the usual Fair atmosphere. I think they also have some bands playing at the Fair that night and, if you want to come a day early, they have great car races going on Friday night. The Sprint Cars and Late Models put on a great show on the 1/4 mile, high-banked track.

Any final thoughts as to what to expect for the weekend?
Just want to thank the Grand Forks County Fair for giving this a try and I hope to see everybody at the races. Thanks, Justin.
